Operational safety measures

This section outlines key operational measures used to support staff safety and business continuity during the reporting period.

Lone worker system

A significant risk reduction measure introduced in 2025 has been the Orbis Red Alert lone worker application. This is a relatively low-cost solution providing significant improvement in lone worker controls. The application is added to lone workers' phones. Whilst activated on shift, the app uses GPS tracking and is set to an Amber setting. If a worker fails to cancel their Amber status, which could occur if someone has had an accident, then the system will move into the Red Alert status, triggering FSS management escalation, or external emergency service escalation if required. If the user is in need of immediate assistance, they can self-activate a Red Alert at any time, to be put directly in touch with the 24/7 caller handler centre.

This system in now in daily use by Feed staff who are lone working, visiting farm locations. FSS has also provided the system to a limited number of workers with significant underlying health issues, who are either using the phone app or in possession of a Red Alert fob.

Adverse weather

FSS continues to use the MET Office as its source of information for communication of Amber and Red weather warnings to staff via the Group Call messaging service. No Red weather warnings impacted service delivery in this reporting period.

FSS was pleased to be able to share our Adverse Weather Procedure and Group Call service with the Food Standards Agency, to assist them in improving their weather management.
