Our strategy and vision

We focus on the food issues that matter most to people in Scotland, including renewed emphasis on improving the Scottish diet and associated negative health consequences

Our vision

Food Standards Scotland's vision is:

A safe, authentic and healthier food environment that Scotland can trust

Our strategy for 2026–2031 sets out how we will continue to protect the people of Scotland by ensuring the food we eat is safe, authentic and supports healthier choices. As Scotland’s independent public sector food body, we base all our advice and decisions on robust science, evidence and the needs of consumers.

Over the next five years, we will strengthen our work to prevent foodborne illness, reduce the impact of poor diet, and make sure consumers have clear and trustworthy information about the food they buy. We will also modernise the way food law is delivered in Scotland so that it is effective, consistent and supports responsible businesses.

Digital transformation is a key priority. We will make better use of data and new technologies to identify risks earlier, respond more quickly to challenges, and communicate more clearly with the public.

The strategy also recognises the wider issues influencing our food system, including climate change, new food technologies and pressures on public services.

Through collaboration and transparency, we will help build a food system that is healthier, more resilient and trusted by everyone in Scotland.
