Our work is based on robust science and evidence from literature reviews, data we collect, food and feed sampling, diet tracking and research we fund through our Food and Health Research Programme (FHRP)

Our scientific principles

We ensure high levels of governance to ensure our science is:

  • Strategic - focused on our priorities and shaped by the interests of Scottish consumers
  • Robust - strengthened through peer review and expert scrutiny
  • Independent - free from undue political or industry influence, with clear separation for risk assessment and risk management decision-making
  • Transparent - open about how we use evidence, including uncertainties, and committed to publishing our findings
  • Innovative - driving new scientific understanding to support public health and Scotland’s food system
  • Forward-looking - monitoring emerging science and identifying future evidence needs through horizon scanning

Our scientific expertise and access to support

FSS has a skilled team of scientists - including nutritionists, microbiologists, chemists, social scientists, and statisticians - who provide expert technical and scientific advice across our policy areas. 

Our team stays up to date through training, collaboration, and participation in expert groups, conferences, and workshops, sharing their work through publications and presentations. 

Our science is further supported by independent UK Scientific Advisory Committees, which offer expert guidance on risk assessment and evidence use.

FSS and the Food Standards Agency also jointly designates a UK wide network of National Reference Laboratories and Official Food and Feed Laboratories. They provide an additional source of expert technical advice on the testing of food and animal feed for a range of regulated microbiological and chemical contaminants.   

Our Food and Health Research Programme (FHRP)

Our FHRP comprises of 6 priority themes, under each of which we have identified our Areas of Research Interest (ARI). 

Our ARI are the key research questions that FSS needs to address to ensure the delivery of our statutory responsibilities and strategic objectives relating to food safety, public health nutrition and consumer protection is based on robust science and evidence.
