SEFARI fellowship: the older population and foodborne illness

Determining the lifestyle factors which cause particular members of the older population to become ill with foodborne illness.

A review for Food Standards Scotland found that adults aged 65 and older, while comprising 20% of Scotland’s population, account for a disproportionately high share of foodborne illnesses. Although biological factors explain increased vulnerability, further research was needed on behaviours and perceptions that may increase risk in this demographic. The SEFARI fellowship identified lifestyle factors that increase susceptibility to foodborne illness in the older population and provided recommendations for improved, targeted food safety advice and communication approaches for this clinically vulnerable group.
