A Survey of Anisakid Nematodes in Salmon

This follow-up study compared wild and farmed salmon to assess whether farmed salmon, fed controlled diets, were free from anisakid infections

Summary

Research undertaken by the University of Stirling

This was research was undertaken to determine:

  1. If salmon farmed in Scotland contained larval anisakids within their muscle tissue. If parasites were not found then this would potentially provide epidemiological evidence that farmed salmon fed controlled pelleted feed were not at risk from anisakid parasites
  2. The level of infection, and species, of Anisakis and Pseudoterranova in the flesh of migrating wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. returning to freshwater river systems in Scotland. This will confirm whether wild Atlantic salmon in Scotland are indeed at risk of infection and provide information on the species of anisakid worms found in Scottish wild salmon.
