Shape Scotland’s food future: FSS launches public consultation on 2026–31 strategy

Food Standards Scotland (FSS) is inviting consumers, food businesses, industry representatives, and stakeholders across Scotland to share their views on its draft Strategy for 2026–2031.

The proposed strategy, titled “A Safe, Authentic and Healthier Food Environment that Scotland Can Trust”, sets out FSS’s vision and priorities for the next five years. It outlines how FSS will continue to protect public health, ensure food and feed safety and authenticity, and support healthier diets across Scotland.

The consultation is a vital opportunity for the public and stakeholders to help shape the future of Scotland’s food system. FSS is particularly keen to hear views on how it can:

  • Strengthen consumer protection through science-led regulation and risk analysis
  • Support healthier dietary choices and reduce diet-related health inequalities
  • Modernise food law delivery and improve compliance across the food chain
  • Enhance digital and data capabilities to improve decision-making and public services
  • Promote sustainability and resilience in the face of climate and economic challenges

Geoff Ogle, Chief Executive of Food Standards Scotland, said: “Our strategy sets out an ambitious vision for a food system that is safe, trusted and supports the health and wellbeing of everyone in Scotland.

“We want to hear from the people and organisations who are affected by our work — from consumers and food businesses to local authorities and public health partners. Your views will help ensure our strategy is robust, inclusive and fit for the future.”

The consultation is open until September 14. To read the draft strategy and submit your response, visit: https://consult.foodstandards.gov.scot/communications-marketing/fss-strategy-2026-to-2031.
