Regulatory approach and policy

We're committed to reducing regulatory burdens on business, in line with the Scottish Government’s approach to better regulation. This helps to support a responsible and flourishing food and drink sector.

The Scottish Government has a well-established Better Regulation agenda. This aims to cut outdated and inefficient regulation, tackle regulatory system inconsistencies and enhance Scotland's competitiveness by championing the 5 principles of Better Regulation. These are that regulation should be:

  • proportionate
  • consistent
  • accountable
  • transparent
  • targeted

Scottish regulators' strategic code of practice

As a Scottish regulator, FSS must have due regard to the Scottish regulators’ strategic code of practice in the way we work.

The Code was introduced in February 2015 under The Regulatory Reform (Scotland) Act 2014. It looks to promote consistent, proportionate and effective regulation in Scotland.

The 2014 Act also places a statutory duty on Scottish regulators, including FSS, to contribute to sustainable economic growth where this does not conflict with primary statutory duties.
