About the consultation process

If you're unsure whether your product is classed as a novel food, you can submit a consultation request. This is also known as an Article 4 request.

Retained EU Regulation 2018/456 sets out the information needed to decide if a food is novel. If your food is classed as novel, you must apply for authorisation before you can legally sell it in Great Britain (GB).

How to submit an Article 4 request

You can submit an Article 4 request and supporting evidence through the regulated products application service.

In the ‘Product type’ section:

  • choose ‘Other’
  • explain in the product summary that you’re submitting an Article 4 consultation request

You can also use this service to apply for authorisation of a novel food in Great Britain.

Previous statements

We have issued the following statements on foods assessed through the consultation process.

Unless stated otherwise, decisions on the novel food status of a food made by the EU before 11pm on 31 December 2020 still apply in Great Britain. EU decisions made after this date do not apply.
