Report Into Current and Historical Abattoir & Slaughterhouse Provision Across Scotland

Request

Your request was about the following information:

I am compiling on behalf of Scottish Government a report into current and historical abattoir & slaughterhouse provision across Scotland. We aim to show how the numbers of abattoirs across Scotland have changed over time.

Please could Food Standards Scotland supply me with a historical record of the names of Scottish abattoirs over the last 30 years (or as historical as possible) and particularly the dates that each premise has either opened or closed/no longer trading.

Response

Food Standards Scotland (FSS) publishes the data for Approved Establishments on the FSS website. Please find below the relevant link:

Approved Establishments Register

This link will give you access to all current plants and their approval information (ie slaughterhouses, cutting plants etc)

Also, attached you can find a document that has a list of plants with expired approvals and some information regarding the dates of surrenders/withdrawals of approval. Unfortunately we do not hold any more detailed information, such as the exact activities each of these plants were approved for, so cannot differentiate between standalone cutting plants, game handling establishments and slaughterhouses.

Finally, we would like to inform you that the Food Standards Agency (FSA) held jurisdiction in Scotland prior to April 2015 and that they may be better placed to offer historical information about Scottish plants.
