Summary

The Radioactivity in Food and the Environment (RIFE) report is an annual report that details sampling and analysis carried out by UK authorities on levels of radioactive substances in food and the environment.

These monitoring activities are designed or undertaken by the Environment Agency, Food Standards Agency, Food Standards Scotland, Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

The key finding of the 2021 report is that the total radiation dose to members of the public is significantly below the annual dose limit (1 millisievert for all exposures). This demonstrates that radioactivity in food and the environment is safe. The 2021 figures are similar to those found in 2020.
