Food Standards Scotland statement following Public Health England’s latest childhood obesity plan announcement

Food Standards Scotland’s Chief Executive, Geoff Ogle, said: “It’s no secret that we have an obesity problem in Scotland, with two out of three of us either overweight or obese.

“Food Standards Scotland’s recommendations to tackle Scotland’s diet-related poor health include the reformulation of food and drink products to reduce calories, sugars, fats and salt. We therefore welcome Public Health England’s announcement of a calorie reduction programme to be achieved by reformulation.

“There is no easy solution to addressing our deep-rooted, poor diet in Scotland. And the need to reduce our calorie intake, in addition to reformulation of the high salt, sugar and fat food and drinks products is part of a package of measures which Food Standards Scotland has put forward to improve our diet-related health.”
