Requirements for a Slaughterhouse for Slaughter to Muslims

Request

Your request was about the following information:

I want to invest in beef, sheep and goats, so I want to buy a farm and open a slaughterhouse inside the farm for slaughter to Muslims.
If you can please help by providing me with all the requirements that must be met for such an investment in terms of the area of the required farm, the specifications for the slaughterhouse and if there are any additional licenses or approvals must be obtained before starting the investment process.

Response

Food Standards Scotland (FSS) as a competent authority can provide you only with information regarding requirements for the approval of a slaughterhouse (with/without a collocated cutting plant) and can only direct you in regards to the requirements for the farms. The competent authorities for farms in general are the Local Authorities (LA) and Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), so we advise you to make contact with them in relation to farm requirements.

Regarding the approval of a new slaughterhouse, FSS can provide you with one or more advisory visits prior to the actual approval process in order to discuss the requirements in detail and we would follow that up with a written report also. Please note that the work by FSS (including visit on site and report writing) would be chargeable to you at a rate of £97.65/ hour.

You can find more details on the FSS approval process by visiting the below link:

If you wish to start the approval process you would need to complete the below online form and upload required documentation, as prompted:
