Microplastics, Testing and Farmed Salmon

Request

Please provide information on microplastics, testing and farmed salmon since 1 January 2017.

Please include testing of microplastics in farmed fish.

Please detail any scientific studies, correspondence on the issue, internal briefings, media reaction, research and other information.

Response

While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance Food Standards Scotland does not have the information you have requested.  FSS is aware of microplastics as a potential emerging risk in seafood but has not carried out any testing or monitoring for microplastics in farmed salmon and does not hold any relevant information on the occurrence of microplastics in farmed salmon, other farmed fish or wild fish. Additionally we liaise closely with our sister organisation, the Food Standards Agency, on matters relating to contaminants and are aware that their position is similar.

However, you may wish to contact Marine Scotland Science at marinescotland@gov.scot who may be able to help you.
