Official feed and food control laboratories

Details of official feed and food control laboratories that are designated to undertake sample analysis work for Scotland.

Official feed and food laboratories are Public Analysts (PA), Agricultural Analysts (AA) and Food Examiners (FE) that undertake work for local authorities for enforcement purposes. Other designated laboratories undertake official controls in specified areas for monitoring purposes.

All official laboratories must employ suitably qualified staff.  Laboratories undertaking enforcement work for local authorities must have a Public or Agricultural Analyst (formally appointed by a local authority) or a qualified Food Examiner. As the Competent Authority, FSS are responsible for designating official control laboratories for Scotland under the Official Feed and Food Control Regulations 2017/625. None of the laboratories are owned or operated by FSS.

National Reference Laboratories (NRLs)

NRLs are a UK wide network of specialist laboratories responsible for maintaining standards for the routine testing of feed, food and animal health.  They also provide advice and support to official control laboratories on methods for official control testing.

The FSA designates NRLs for the UK for food and feed, with funding contributions from FSS. Defra has responsibility for designating NRLs for GB for animal health and live animals. For a list of NRLs, please refer to the FSA website (National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) | Food Standards Agency).
